Dr. Ravi Kannan, the Oncologist, is announced as a recipient of the 2023 Ramon Magsaysay Award

Oncologist Dr. Ravi Kannan and his wife Sita moved to Silchar, Assam from Chennai in 2007 to assume leadership of the hospital and research center. He received the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour in India, and was chosen as one of the four recipients of the 2023 Ramon Magsaysay honour, frequently referred to as Asia’s Nobel Prize.
Dr. Ravi Kannan highlighted that he would only accept this award on behalf of the team and that it was a reward for his hospital. “We’re all working as a team, and everyone is contributing equally, to make this initiative effective,” he stated. Winners include both individuals who work here and those who provide outside support.

Dr. Ravi Kannan: Leading CCHRC and Pioneering Cancer Care Accessibility in Assam

In 2007, Sita and Kannan assumed leadership of CCHRC. Dr. Ravi Kannan had previously served as a surgeon at the Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai, where he had received the Padma Shri award for his services to medicine.
To make it easier for patients to receive follow-up care, Kannan opened clinics in Assam’s Karimganj, Haflong, and Dima Hasao. Dr. Ravi Kannan believed that healthcare facilities should be accessible in every area. He emphasized the fact that the patient to doctor ratio at CCHRC has increased to over 90%, a notable improvement from the prior rate of less than 50%. He oversaw the region’s first microvascular surgery for a cancer patient there in 2012—a groundbreaking treatment.

Dr. Ravi Kannan

The Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Kannan on obtaining the prestigious prize and thanked him for bringing about significant advances in cancer care, particularly in rural parts of Assam, in a tweet on Twitter
Kannan, the son of a famous officer in the Indian Air Force, noted that both the state and the federal governments support them with health programs like the Atal Amrit Abhiyan, making better healthcare easily accessible to the underprivileged. We are a center operated by society, and the government never turns us down when we ask for help, he said.

Dr. Ravi Kannan emphasized that cancer may be treated just like any other illness. I don’t want to see someone die indignably just because they have cancer, he said. He pointed out that Assam and other northeastern regions have a higher cancer risk due to lifestyle choices made by residents, including the use of tobacco, betel nuts, and alcohol. He emphasized the need of exercise and a healthy diet, noting that many people don’t realize how serious cancer is until they are helpless, and some even try to hide it. He stressed how crucial it is to combat this mindset, which they have been doing for more than ten years.

Indumati, Kannan’s mother, said she was confident in her son’s future success. She and her husband had always desired for their son to become a doctor so that he can help the underprivileged. She commended his commitment and modesty and expressed her wish that he would keep doing good deeds. We are a modest South Indian vegetarian family living in one of the country’s most picturesque locations, she remarked.

Overview of Indian winners of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards

Ramon Magsaysay served as president of the Philippines following the end of World War II. In an idealistic and skeptic culture, this award was created as a symbol of government integrity, selfless devotion to fellow citizens, and dedication to democratic principles. The award was established in 1957 and is given to Asians who have achieved great success in their vocations. It had six categories at first, but in 2009, five of them were eliminated.

This honor falls under the Emerging Leadership category and is given to people under the age of 40 whose leadership may not be well known outside of their community but who have selflessly devoted their lives to improving that community. The Ford Foundation sponsors this category, which was established in 2000.

Selection and Presentation of the Award

This award acknowledges and recognizes individuals in Asia who have made successes in their particular disciplines, without regard to caste, creed, color, race, or gender. More than 300 organizations and people have received this honor during the previous 50 years. The award winners are chosen by the trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Foundation, and they are presented with a medal featuring Sir Ramon Magsaysay along with a certificate. Every year on August 31st, this honor is presented in Manila, the Philippines. The honor was first presented to people from Sri Lanka, the Philippines, China, India, and Indonesia. Vinoba Bhave was the first Indian to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1958 under the category of Community Leadership.

Eligibility to Receive the Award

  • This award, considered the highest honor of the continent, recognizes greatness and sentiment displayed by people who have selflessly dedicated their lives to the welfare of the people in a democratic community.
  • People in Asia who have achieved notable accomplishments and excellence in their field and have dedicated their lives selflessly to public service or the well-being of others without self-promotion are eligible for this award.
  • The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation is the organization in charge of managing the award. The Board of Trustees of the foundation makes the decisions regarding who will get this prize.
