Iraq circled the Indian side with long balls in an effort to score the game-winning goal, but the Indian defense stood strong. Following Zidan Ikbal’s red card, Iraq increased their pressure in the final seconds of the game. However, India was unable to capitalize on their numerical advantage as the game entered a tense penalty shootout.
Brandon Fernandes struck the post in the tie-breaker.
In the third-place game on Sunday, the Indian men’s football team will compete against Lebanon and the tournament host Thailand.
India last competed in the King’s Cup in 2019, and they came away with a bronze medal. The Blue Tigers defeated Thailand 1-0 to earn third place after falling to Curacao in the semifinals.
