The Solar Mission, which comes after the famous Chandrayaan-3 mission that made India one of only four countries capable of soft-landing on the Moon, intends to offer the best viewing opportunities for studying the Sun. According to Ramesh, a professor at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, the best time to launch a trip to the L1 point is between January and September because of the fuel needs and the planets’ positions. The good news is that the spacecraft will enter its intended orbit in early 2024, giving it enough time to observe the ascending and falling solar cycles in 2025 for several months. Typically, the solar cycle has an 11-year cycle.

Initially envisioned in 2006 as a mission to study the Sun’s corona from the lower Earth orbit, the mission was later revamped with more sophisticated instruments from the satellite bus category, capable of studying solar events without the hindrance of Earth’s interference, providing a clear view of the Sun from the L1 point.

Between two celestial bodies, there exist five Lagrange points. These points can act as parking spots in space where the gravitational pull of celestial bodies is balanced, allowing a satellite to remain in position without expending a significant amount of fuel.

The mission’s main objective is to learn as much as possible about our nearest star and how its radiation, heat, and particles impact us. Researchers will be able to observe the solar corona’s lowest layers thanks to cutting-edge scientific investigations, which may help them understand why the corona is over a million degrees Celsius while the Sun’s surface is only 5,500 degrees Celsius.
